Psychologists have a duty to safeguard the security and well-being of their patients. Therefore it is necessary to carry out research to determine whether or not a psychological treatment may produce physical or emotional adverse effects. We discuss methods such as benchmarking, systematic reviews, and meta-analysis as strategies to build an empirical base on the effectiveness of treatments and psychological practices.
